To Find Our Lost Friends—Dragonflies
(寻找我们失去的朋友—蜻蜓)
Distinguished Teachers, fellow students,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good morning! My name is Wang Hong-qian. You may call me Thomas. I am a second-year student in the High School of Tsinghua University in Beijing. Thanks for the opportunity to represent the Beijing team to explain our research project. Great to see you all today.
I attended a summer camp held by the Hong Kong Academy of Youth Sciences this July/August, where we learned and made a micro film about dragonflies. Hong Kong is known for its skyscrapers. However Hong Kong is also heaven for dragonflies. Most parts of Hong Kong land, roughly 76% are in the undeveloped primitive state, that provides an ideal place for a lot of small species. According to books, Hong Kong has 123 kinds of dragonflies in numerous ponds, rivers and wetlands. When we visited the ponds of the Hong Kong Park which was described as “kingdom of dragonflies”, we are very disappointed. We discovered not so much dragonflies! Where are they, our friends? Instead we found a lot of red-eared sliders in the ponds. Hong Kong people call them brazilian turtles. We discovered that many years ago they were sold to Hong Kong from America as pet. This creature has very strong ability to reproduce. The big trouble is that they don’t have any predators except we human being of course. People cannot afford to raise so many at home and therefore abandon them in public water, without realizing they are predators of dragonflies! Our friends, the beautiful dragonflies become delicious food of the turtles. The purpose of making this micro film is to let people have a deeper understanding of the small creatures that often appear around us but are not given enough attention.
This was something I hadn't thought of before We human being are too selfish. Only for our entertainment we actually mobilize wars amongst species. Many useful friends like dragonflies are killed in endless wars. We want to open our eyes to observe the nature, and to find the biological mystery in the place where the city and nature may combine. We want to explore the truth of that ignored world and look for answers to improve. Next we plan to ask the Hong Kong government to improve its relevant policies and laws to create a more favorable environment for dragonflies and other small creatures to live and grow.
I learned a lot from this research project. I now have observant eyes and heart of perseverance. I want to see the truth of that beautiful ignored world with my video camera and image how to help. As my teacher said in class, imaging makes science more beautiful. Most importantly I realized that the earth is not only belongs to us human being, but also to the dragonflies, the birds, the trees. They are all our friends. Whenever we try to do something, we need to consider more the various effects to all our friends. One day when all our friends disappeared, we will also disappear. I believe this the truth. Thank you.

Unequivocal Love Towards Youth Science Discovery Video
By YANG Muhua, Hong Kong, China
October, 2018, Boston
Distinguished Chairman, Judges, Principles, Teachers, parents and dear fellow students,
Good morning! My name is Yang Muhua from team of Hong Kong. Perhaps you are familiar with this name and this face because of my discovery video. Although it is the first time that I come to Boston, it is the third time that my projects appear at the International Youth Science Fair for Discovery Video. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to present here, and tell my story, a young man who has unequivocal love towards youth science discovery video.
At first, I can speak with confidence that I am a senior fan of Youth Science Discovery Video. During my childhood, instead of watching Transformers and Disney, I have enjoyed watching Youth Science Discovery Video for hundreds of times. At that time, all projects were still produced by Japanese youth. Although I cannot read Japanese, the Discovery Videos have deeply attracted me. I also want to research a project and investigate creatures in the nature just like those little scientists in the videos.
Then, I became a senior producer of Youth Science Discovery Video. Do you remember the documentaries? The water striders and water pollution, the gecko and their eggs , the wasp and her family, the weaver ants and their galaxy nests, and so on. They all were made by my hands. Every years, I spent my summer holiday to research a project. Peoples always joking that the longest distance in the world is not from life to death, but from Introduction to references. Actually for me, this distance is not the longest, but the happiest. From making these projects, I learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and certainly, Arts. So we got the STEM (STEAM) of our life through Youth Science Discovery Video. Not only I enjoy the STEM in this, but also the students sitting under the stage who with the same experience of happiness.
Last but not least, these experiences inspire me and light my dream. I wish to become not only a scientist to discover the amazing nature, but also a tutor to help more students set off their curiosity through lens. My tutor told me that “Find something to be passionate above.” I found it, I enjoy it, I love it. I hope more teenagers to find it too.
Thanks for your kind attention.

Good morning/afternoon, honourable judges, teachers and fellow students. I am a student who comes from Macau Pui Ching Middle School. I feel proud that we could come to Boston, the city of United States America to participate in the 3rd International Youth Science Fair for Discovery Videos Competition. Today, we are here together, with students and teachers from different parts of the world. Hope you can enjoy our competition and have a nice day.
We are students from Pui Ching Middle School in Macau, China, and I feel so proud that we can participate in such a grand competition for going abroad. Macau is our hometown, is one of the special administrative regions of China. We are very similar to Hong Kong, such as people there both speak cantonese, and we both have Pui Ching Middle School. I have been studying in Pui Ching Middle School since I was four, so I have a deep relationship with my school, not only with my classmates, but also the human touch of this place. Pui Ching Middle School is one of most great schools in Macau. Our school was founded in Guangzhou, China, 134 years ago, and spreaded to Macau and Hong Kong later.
Science Fair Discovery Video is absolutely a challenge for us. At first, I was only a kid who knows how to read and write. I didn’t know how to use my knowledge. Even I learnt the reason or the result of something, I didn’t know how to present it to others. After I learnt how to film a video, how to direct a video. I have another way to tell others what I have learnt and what I thought. Although the process of shooting a video is not that easy, but it is great for me to have a new way of learning.
At last, I would like to end my speech with a quote. “Develop a passion of learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.” By Anthony J.D’Angelo. For me, participating in the competition is a learning method. We communicate with each others, and learn from each others. Hope we can enjoy our competition today. Thank you.

In America, there are many other academic opportunities to explore outside of school. These academic opportunities are usually for more advanced students. Personally, this past summer I attended a summer program for advanced students. This summer program is called the Center for Talented Youth, or CTY. The CTY summer program is a rigorous three week long course in a class of your choosing. To gain admission to this program, you must take a standardized test, and meet a set score for your grade level.Achieving this score is not easy since the test taken is a lot more advanced than regular school work. Much of the material on these tests are not learned in school, so achieving this score is very hard. But, if you are able to get a high enough score, you are eligible for CTY. CTY has a vast selection of classes you are able to take. These classes vary from different subjects. CTY offers english, math, technology, science, and engineering classes. I chose to take “Principles of Engineering Design”.
CTY is available at select colleges and universities across America. You live at the college or university you chose for three weeks. I went to Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island for CTY. The CTY class schedule is intense. There is class from 9am-12pm and 1pm-3pm Monday to Friday. There is also class from 7pm-9pm Monday to Thursday, and Sunday. Since CTY is an advanced program for accelerated students, these classes are usually fast paced. These classes are taught by distinguished, well-educated teachers, instructors, and professors. You use college-level textbooks in these courses. The “Principles of Engineering Design” class was very enjoyable because we were able to apply the math and science we learned in the classroom, to the projects that we built in the lab. There were several projects built in this class during the three week session. In our first project, we were asked to build something that would raise a 100 gram weight 16 centimeters in the air on its own. To do this, we had to use the information we learned about trigonometry, forces, and motion. Other projects we performed included a catapult, a bottle rocket egg drop, a bridge, and a solar boat. In the catapult project, we had to launch a ping-pong ball at a 45 degree angle to achieve the maximum range. In the bottle egg drop project, we attached a module on top of a bottle rocket that would launch into the air. We had to design the module to protect an egg from cracking during the launch, flight, and landing. The module also had to withstand the force of the drop. My group’s egg module succeeded, and the egg did not crack. In the bridge project, we were tasked with the problem of building a bridge able to hold the weight of 19 liters of water, or 19 kilograms. To do this, we had to utilize the information about stresses we learned about in class. The bridge my team built was able to bear a weight of 38 kilograms, or 38 liters of water. In the solar boat project, we were tasked to build a boat that ran on solar energy. After these projects, we performed a final project. In this project, we were able to build anything we wanted. My group attempted to build a mechanical arm for precise motion. This required lots of work. We had to combine our knowledge of circuits, motion, forces and more. My group was making lots of progress, but we did not have time to complete this.
Aside from academics, CTY also has a social side. There are many activities you can chose to do during free time. On the weekends, there are organized events and dances. CTY is a chance to meet lots of different people from different backgrounds. When I went to CTY, I met students from Hong Kong, Dubai, SuZhou, GuangZhou, and Brazil. CTY is available all over america, but international students are welcome. CTY is one of many academic opportunities outside of school.
Overall, CTY has benefited me academically and socially. At CTY, I learned a lot about how actual engineering works and what engineers do on a day-to-day basis. Also, CTY benefited me socially because now I am connected to people I met through CTY, and I know people from all over the world. CTY was a great experience, and I encourage you to try it
